Wood Painting Painting is the major decorating process to choose when changing the home wood panels, wood walls and wood furnitures. The very first step for wood painting is the choice of the right color. There are many varieties of paints in the market now. The alkyd paints are used for woodworks. Be sure to prepare the surfaces before painting. Fill cracks, sand irregularities and remove dust and knots before painting. Repainting the wood with the same color does not need stripping off. Painting the wood with another color needs completely stripping off the glossy surface of the wood using wet and dry paper saturated in hot water solution of sugar soap and water. Areas of barewood should be primed. Use paint maker's recommended undercoat if painting the wood with different color, then apply one or two top coats and let it dry completely. Waxing and french polishing the wood Waxing or polishing with wax is a very common finish to wood works and wood furnitures. This wood coating turns the surfaces to slighty dark color and give glossy-shiny finish to woods. Waxing is good for woodworks because the oil of the wax is stopping the wood from being dry. French finishing is waxing wood in layers applying thin coats of shellac onto the surface of the wood and let the woods shine through. French polishing is a difficult application and it takes practice to master it. There are also available french polishing kits from the market. Most high quality wood works and furnitures are finished with french polishing. Old or second hand furnitures need restoration by french polishing. Today's variety of waxes can work effectively with different color of woodgrains. |
