How do wallcoverings affect the color and size of a room?
Wallcoverings are fashionable and they feature decorative effect in the house. Wallcoverings can cover poor surfaces and can create original look to rooms. There are different kinds of wallcoverings now in the market and their prices vary. Choosing the right and proper color scheme and design of the wallpaper affects the color and size of the area.

| Always choose the paint that is not washable for long lasting wall cover.Varnishing is one way to give more darker colors to wood walls. Varnishes, although not colorful, give a luster and shiny surfaces to wood walls. Before painting and varnishing, sand the wall surfaces for irregularities, fill and cover the holes and remove knots. Paints cover permanent and ugly stains in the wall while varnishes do not.
Wallpapers with vertical stripes can create a perception of high wall. The horizontal with vertical stripe wallpapers make a wall seemed wider and lower. The bold design wallpapers are best on large wall areas. A large repeating wallpaper design will make a room seem smaller. The small repeating design makes a wall wider and bigger. Unlike painting, wallcovering can hide minor cracks.
Types of wallpapers:
- Washable papers are in the easy prepared form. These are machine-printed with protective, transparent on top.
- Vinyl papers are heavy-duty, hard-wearing papers. They are made up of simple designs printed into plastic or vinyl with special inks, secured to the back of the paper. This wallpaper is difficult to remove. Many may need heavy wall pastes.
- Embossed papers are manufactured by pressure from an embossing roller. Damp embossing has the possibility to maintain it's design and shape during pasting.
- Machine-printed paper are multicolored wallcoverings. These are the most common used wallcoverings and they are available in different weights and qualities.
- Hand-printed wallcoverings are most expensive because of the labor cost.
- Flock wallpapers are more economical machine papers. The design has wool or silk fibers dusted onto it.
- Woodchip wallcoverings have wood thin slices sealed between two layers of the paper. They have rough surface textures and they suit well on below standard surfaces, hiding cracks and wall defects. These wallcoverings are difficult to scrape or remove.
Liner wallpapers are used to line the wall. They function to make an uneven and restored wall look better.
Finish wallpapering the ceiling first before wallpapering the walls. Painting is done first before wallpapering and make sure that the paint is dry enough in order not to erase the paint while wallpapering. When non self-adhesive paper is used, be sure to use the right adhesive recommended for the chosen wallpaper. Wearing overalls or apron with pocket large enough to put the brushes, scissors and adhesives while wallpapering is necessary.
Wall tiles are available in hardware stores and tile shops. These wall tiles come in different colors, textures, patterns, smooth, designs and shapes. Plain tiles can be combined with patterned tiles and they are cheap ones. Tiled surfaces are very easy to clean.
Types of wall tiles:
- Mosaic tiles are squared tiny ceramic tiles. They are mounted interlocking and grouted. These tiles are also durable, waterproof and stain resistant. These tiles are mostly used in the kitchens and bathrooms.
- Ceramic tiles are the modern tiles which are durable, water and stain resistant. Ceramic tiles are squared forms of clay with glazed glossy design on the front part. These type of wallcoverings are mostly used in the kitchens and in the bathrooms.
- Brick tiles are artificial or real small slices of bricks available in different colors. Bricks are durable. These wallcoverings are mostly used for fireplaces walls. Bricks should not be mounted on areas used with splashes of grease, water and too much steam.
- Mirror tiles are squared or rectangular pieces of mirrors. Mirror tiles are durable and stain resistant. These type of wallcoverings cannot be mounted on wet areas.
- Cork tiles are compacted layers of bark of trees. Cork wallcoverings are warm and good insulators. These cork wall tiles must be sealed with polyurethane varnish in order to get cleaned easily. Cork wallcoverings are also water resistant but cannot be mounted on areas with too much water such as showers.
- Plastic tiles are plastic sheets that have hollow backs which should be fixed with self adhesive pads. These plastic wallcoverings are used to lessen noise. These wallcoverings can be mounted on kitchens but not near a heated area and bathrooms.
- Metallic tiles are silver, gold or copper colored shiny surfaces. These wallcoverings have heat proof surfaces. These are easy to clean and durable wallcoverings. These are mostly mounted on kitchens and bathrooms but not near a steaming area.
When buying tiles, always check for chips on the tiles. Check also the colors if they have color differences. Buy extra tiles for the replacement of any breakages and repairs.
