Related ideas: Grow Plants With The Right Soil The Soil Improvement Improve the soil by adding garden compost, green manure and pile of cut grasses or the good soil that can be bought in the stores. These organic matters will improve moisture, improve soil structure and allow water to drain away. Add these organic matters by dugging in or by mulching. Mulching, though, cannot help solve the problems especially if the soil is compacted. If soil is so compacted, it needs a single digging. To single dig, mark the area to dig and lay on its surface the organic matter to be mixed with the topsoil when digging. Scoop out about 12 inches wide portion of the compacted soil, remove debris and remove lumps from the topsoil, put the topsoil in a piece of plastic sheet. Scoop out a second portion, removing again the debris and put its topsoil to the first hole. The process is repeated until the whole compacted soil is finished. The soil from the first hole will fill the last soil that is dug out. It is difficult to mulch or do soil improvements if the garden plants already matured. The garden space is already tight and so mulching and soil improvements cannot be done properly. The best time to do soil improvement is before planting or just after planting or when the plants are still young. |
