What types of lights are best suited for each area in the house?
Most areas and spaces don't need light during daylight. Spaces or areas that the daylight can't illuminate need light. During night time, the lights of the home should be turned on although many people turn off their lights during sleeping time. Light is very important for everyday chores and for safety reasons. Lights choices will actually depend on its purpose, whether for a
home office, stairways, kitchen, bed lights, halls, bathrooms and many areas in the house. Each area in the house has a purpose, what types of lights are best suited for each area?
A. Pendant fixtures are those lights that are fixed to the ceiling. They are used as back-up for modern lamps. These lights can also function with a dimmer switch. Pendant fixtures are very useful in halls, stairs and passage areas. | |

| Pendant fixture lightings come in many styles, like chandeliers, oil and gas lighting fixtures and they come in many different shapes like cones, bells, pleats, balls and pyramids. They also come in different shades like paper, wood, fabric, glass, metal and other materials. These type of lights must be attached and wired up to the ceiling using ceiling fixtures. Examples of pendant fixtures are paper ball, bell-shape, chandelier, lantern, the traditional light fixtures and flourescent fixtures.
Flourescent fixtures are very useful decorative lighting fixtures. They are widely used in the kitchens.
They can fit under a glass shelf for decorations. Flourescent fixtures consume low energy and they are less expensive to buy. They also cast bright lights and little shadows which are very comfortable for work areas. Large boxed flourescent tube, small boxed flourescent tube and strip lighting are the kinds of flourescent fixtures.
B.The portable light fixtures are those movable ones like table lamps, desk lamps and standard lamps. The standard lamps and traditional lamps emit diffused light while the desk lights emit light directed straight to the working area. The desk lamps save space because they come with a stand or clip-on fixing. Examples of portable lights are table lamps, hi-desk lamps, standard lamps, adjustable desk lamps and wall lights.
Wall lights are controlled with a dimmer switch and mostly used in dark rooms to illuminate dark areas and halls. These fixtures cast a diffused light. The modern wall fixtures radiate a concentrated light which can be directed to a table, chair or used to highlight a decorative plants or pictures or posters. The different kinds of wall lights are bulkhead light, cone-shaped wall light and imitation gas light.
C. Spotlights illuminate directional light in medium, narrow and wide beams. These type of light fixtures can be mounted to a ceiling or recessed for flexibility. They can also be fixed to a clamp on desks, bookshelves or clipped into a wall as lighting tracks. Examples of spotlights are general purpose spotlight, low-illumination spotlight, cowled spotlight and uplighter and downlighter spotlights.
Downlighters are used to radiate light to a lower level from the ceiling. These fixtures are cylindrical and squares. They can be installed fully in a hollow into the ceiling or mounted into the surface of the ceiling. Narrow uplighters and downlighters highlight a certain area while the wide light kind gives more light. The uplighters are fitted opposite giving light up into the ceiling.
