Growing Herbs Inside The House
Although herbs can be preserved to be used in the kitchen as seasonings by drying them, herbs are best tasty if they are fresh. Growing herbs in the house is the solution for fresh herbs. Not all herbs are for indoors but the following herbs are grown inside the house through winter.
Sweet basil
Chervil
Chives
Dill
Fennel
Lemon Balm
Mint
Parsley
Tarragon
Thyme
House plant herbs can be grown on plastic or clay pots with good drainage. Start planting herbs in the pots with 3 to 4 inches of pottingt soil. Each pot is preferred three seeds barely covered in soil. Until the seeds germinate, the planted pots with herb seeds must be in shady parts of the garden. After the seeds began to grow, the pots must be in full sun. Allow the seedlings to grow bigger to an inch. Let the pots stay outdoors until the beginning of winter so that the herbs grow more and robust before they are moved inside the house.
Lemon balm, mint, parsley, tarragon and thyme need soil digging or excavation during summer time. Each individual plant must be placed in a 4 to 5 inches pot. Every herb transferred to each pot must be kept in a shade for a week or so until the leaves are not wilted. Give the potted plants direct sun little by little everyday. The herbs are ready to be inside the house in the fall.
While herb plants are inside the house, give sun to the potted herb plants. The herbs can endure 70 degrees temperature or higher during the day but the plant herbs need moderately cold temperature during night time. They grow in high humidity and in low temperature during night time. In the hot part of the day, do not water the herb plants unless the plants' leaves are drooping and withered. Fertilizer is not much needed for growing the herb plants because herb plants grow well to bring their aroma and best taste even in a soil that is infertile. Herb plants are not as robust and as big as they are when they are in the outside garden. The reason for this is the roots of the herbs are contained in a pot which has a limited space. Another reason also is that the foliage is always cut off every time the herbs are needed for seasoning or cooking.
