What are floating plants?

Have you seen whole plants that float? Whole plants that float are floating plants. Floating plants are aquatic plants that stay on the surface of the water and their roots do not connect to the ground in order to grow. They grow without any kind of soil and sand which means planting is easy for these kinds of plants. After buying the plants, gather them and lay them on top of the water and that's it. These are low-maintenance plants. They get their foods and nutrients mostly and straight from the water.

These floating plants are used for ponds and aquariums. Because ponds and aquariums are boring with only fishes, floating plants are added to enhance color, shape and beauty. Aside from beautifying plants for ponds and aquariums, the roots of the floating plants are hiding places for fishes and the resting places for eggs of the fishes. The presence of the floating plants also help the reduction of the growth of algae. The leaves of the floating plants serve as surface cover or shade for the fishes for protection from mid day heat and cold temperature of the day. Floating plants are also used as water filters and oxygenators. Fishes eat plants and many of the floating plants are used as food supplements for young and adult fishes. Floating plants are the natural habitat for the aquarium and pond fishes and other water tenants.

Floating plants that are good for small to medium sized aquariums are Azolla or Azolla caroliana, crystalwort or riccia fluitans, hygrophila polysperma and synnema triflorum. Azolla are small floating plants with greenish or reddish leaflike stems and leaves. Azolla grow in masses and they are food supplements for goldfishes. Crystalwort or Riccia Fluitans are like snowflake, mosses bright green plants that float just below the surface of the water. Hygrophila Polysperma are the most attractive plants that grow in pairs of oblong leaves from a stem. Synnema triflorum are water wisteria and with large lobed and cut leaves.

Floating plants that are best for ponds and big aquariums are water hyacinth or eichornia crassipes, water lettuce or pistia stratoides, duckweed or lemna minor and lemna trisulca, water poppy or hydrocleys nymphoides, yellow fringe or nymphoides geminata, floating heart of nymphoides peltata, parrot's feather or myriophyllum aquatica, water four-leaf clover or marsilea. Water hyacinth or Eichornia Crassipes are plants that produces flowers and filter water. Water lettuce or Pistia stratoides have long roots that help filter water. Duckweed Lemna Minor are floating plants that supply foods for the fishes. Duckweed Lemna Trisulca are very good hiding places of fishes. Water poppy or hydrocleys nymphoides, yellow fringe or nymphoides geminata, floating heart of nymphoides peltata, parrot's feather or myriophyllum aquatica, water four-leaf clover or marsilea are beautifying floating plants.

Floating plants are not best to cover all the surfaces of the pond and aquariums. When floating plants grow fast, they tend to get crowded especially in a small aquarium. It creates carbon dioxide that can suffocate the fishes.
