Floating plants that are good for small to medium sized aquariums are Azolla or Azolla caroliana, crystalwort or riccia fluitans, hygrophila polysperma and synnema triflorum. Azolla are small floating plants with greenish or reddish leaflike stems and leaves. Azolla grow in masses and they are food supplements for goldfishes. Crystalwort or Riccia Fluitans are like snowflake, mosses bright green plants that float just below the surface of the water. Hygrophila Polysperma are the most attractive plants that grow in pairs of oblong leaves from a stem. Synnema triflorum are water wisteria and with large lobed and cut leaves. Floating plants that are best for ponds and big aquariums are water hyacinth or eichornia crassipes, water lettuce or pistia stratoides, duckweed or lemna minor and lemna trisulca, water poppy or hydrocleys nymphoides, yellow fringe or nymphoides geminata, floating heart of nymphoides peltata, parrot's feather or myriophyllum aquatica, water four-leaf clover or marsilea. Water hyacinth or Eichornia Crassipes are plants that produces flowers and filter water. Water lettuce or Pistia stratoides have long roots that help filter water. Duckweed Lemna Minor are floating plants that supply foods for the fishes. Duckweed Lemna Trisulca are very good hiding places of fishes. Water poppy or hydrocleys nymphoides, yellow fringe or nymphoides geminata, floating heart of nymphoides peltata, parrot's feather or myriophyllum aquatica, water four-leaf clover or marsilea are beautifying floating plants. Floating plants are not best to cover all the surfaces of the pond and aquariums. When floating plants grow fast, they tend to get crowded especially in a small aquarium. It creates carbon dioxide that can suffocate the fishes.
